Christmas Bokeh

Holidays are time for sparkle and glow. Every photo on instagram has that magical bokeh effect! Sure, you can buy overlays and “cheat” to get that holiday magic, but you’ll be surprised how easy it is to do yourself! Just follow a couple of easy steps to capture Christmas bokeh:

  • Set your aperture as low as your lens will let you go. If you know how to shoot in manual, that is your best bet. If not, set your camera to Av or A instead of Auto mode. Then turn the biggest dial to the left to get your “f/__” setting as low as you can. The camera will do the rest!

  • Place yourself close to your subject, and focus on the subject. If you know how to put your camera in spot focus mode, all the better!

  • If you want big globe lights, place your subject far in front of the lights. If you want smaller circles of light, use less distance between subject and lights.

  • The closer you are to the subject, and the farther the subject is from the light, the bigger your light globes will be.

That’s it! Easier than you thought, right?

If you want to learn more about any of those settings, check out my ebook on photography in Manual Mode. We’ll have you shooting like a pro in under twenty pages!
